Norman James Stewart

Military training

Stewart left Michigan for basic training in Miami Beach, Florida on September 17, 1943. The fall season in southern Florida is quite different than fall in southeastern Michigan. One can only imagine what it was like for Stewart who left home for the first time.

Stewart did not travel far for the next segment of his military training. Following basic training, Stewart was sent to Tyndall Field in northern Florida. It was at Tyndall that Stewart earned his gunnery wings.

The last part of Stewart's training took place at Westover Field in Massachusetts. At Westover he received combat training. From here the Army Air Forces sent Stewart overseas to serve with the 8th Army Air Force, 445th Bomber Group, 701st Squadron at Tibenham, England. He departed for England on July 1, 1944.
