2nd Lieutenant George R. Austin served as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. His aircraft, a B-24 Liberator nicknamed "Patches" (serial number 42-110022), was shot down during this Kassel Mission. While some crew members survived the initial bailout, they were subsequently captured and killed, with Lt. Austin being one of them.
